Dr. Brian S. Chan, a professor at Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS), teaches a theology of beauty, creativity, film, story, and the arts. And he teaches creative writing and visual artmaking with biblical foundations. Before joining DTS, he pastored in Los Angeles and taught at Biola University. Chan is a visiting professor at Evangelical Theological Seminary in Osijek, Croatia. As an award-winning fine artist, Chan exhibits internationally, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Nagasaki Prefectural Museum, Institute of Evangelical and Cultural Research in Rome, The Makery Gallery in Los Angeles, and Spark and Echo exhibition in Manhattan, New York. He is a board member of Lantern of the East Los Angeles (LELA) International Artists. In the film industry, he trained actors in kung fu and worked as an action choreographer and certified kung fu instructor. He is a workshop instructor in Hollywood and the chapter director of Hollywood Prayer Network at DTS. He is a speaker and mentor to Christian artists in the European Leadership Forum. As a writer, he authored The Purple Curtain: Living Out Beauty in Faith & Culture from a Biblical Perspective and Not Easily Broken (a novel). He lives in Dallas, Texas, with his wife Ellen and son Josiah. Personally, he practices bonsai art, geeks out at comic cons, watches films, and hangs with his family.
Chan’s art is a window to how he authentically sees the world. He aims to draw the viewer into a world-immersive experience that offers visions of beauty and illuminates meaning. Artmaking for Chan is a contemplative process, a prayerful journey of inner conversations with God.
